The
Death Railway and the Bridge on the River Kwai such
a tragic part of history where 61,000 Australian, British, American, New Zealand, Danish and Dutch POW's were put to work
by the Japanese Imperial Army to construct a railway line 415 klms long from Singapore through Malaya and Thailand to link
up with the railway network in Burma. The effect was devastating, 16,000 prisoners of war lost their lives when this
railway was built together with 100,000 Asian slave labourers. Stepping into Kanchanaburi War Cemetery you are greeted by the smell of exotic and beautiful flowers.
Amid this beauty it becomes hard to imagine the pain and suffering that destroyed so many lives.
